Art
“Every child is an artist. The problem is to remain an artist once they grow up.”
Pablo Picasso, Artist
Intent
At Liphook Federation, we believe art, craft, and design represent some of the highest forms of human creativity. Our curriculum is designed to develop:
- Substantive knowledge: Understanding of artists, movements, techniques, and materials.
- Disciplinary knowledge: How to create, critique, and evaluate art.
Implementation
We aim for pupils to express imagination, emotion, and individuality while appreciating art’s role in shaping culture and history. Every child, including those with SEND, has access to a rich and ambitious art education that meets and exceeds the National Curriculum. Our end goals ensure pupils leave with the ability to think critically, create confidently, and understand art’s cultural significance.
Art and design are taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds knowledge and skills progressively across year groups. Each unit is planned to deepen pupils’ understanding of key concepts, techniques, and vocabulary, while encouraging creativity and risk-taking. Key features of our implementation include:
Skills Progression: Skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, printing and digital media are mapped across the Federation to ensure continuity and challenge.
Cultural Capital: Pupils encounter a diverse range of artists and artworks from different cultures, historical periods, and genders.
Language of Art: Pupils learn to speak and think like artists by using precise vocabulary to explain ideas, describe techniques, and take part in structured discussions about art.
Assessment: Teachers use formative assessment during lessons and summative reviews at key points to check that pupils know more and remember more.
Enrichment: Opportunities include community links, our Federation Promise and workshops with professional artists. We prioritise the creative process over a fixed outcome, enabling pupils to innovate and explore without fear of failure.
Impact
By the time pupils leave the Federation, they will:
- Be confident, independent artists who can articulate and value their creative journey.
- Demonstrate secure substantive and disciplinary knowledge, enabling them to think critically about art and design.
- Understand how art reflects and shapes history, culture, and society, and appreciate its contribution to creativity and wealth in the wider world.
- Have experienced success and inclusion, regardless of starting point or additional needs.
Our curriculum ensures pupils are prepared for the next stage of their education with a strong foundation in creativity.
