PSHE

“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”

Aristotle, philosopher

Intent

Our PSHE curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to thrive in modern Britain. It builds progressively from Year R to Year 6, covering statutory Relationships and Health Education and preparing pupils for future learning and life. Through themes of health and wellbeing, relationships, and living in the wider world, pupils learn to stay safe, develop resilience, respect diversity, and communicate effectively.

Implementation

PSHE is taught weekly through a carefully sequenced programme using SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship) alongside The Empowerment Approach, and Trick Box, ensuring coverage and progression across year groups. Lessons are interactive and inclusive, with opportunities for structured discussion, reflection, and collaborative learning woven throughout.

Learning is enriched through assemblies, collective worship, themed weeks, drama workshops and opportunities to engage in the Young Citizens programme. Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs) and parent workshops provide additional support for wellbeing and communication. Assessment is ongoing through observation, pupil voice, and evidence in class books, enabling teachers to monitor understanding and adapt teaching.

Impact

By the end of KS2, pupils demonstrate secure knowledge of health, relationships, and personal safety. They show resilience, empathy, and respect, applying strategies learned to manage emotions and make responsible decisions. They leave with the confidence to express themselves, listen to others, and build positive relationships - skills that underpin personal development and future success. Impact is measured through pupil voice, work scrutiny, and wellbeing indicators. Pupils leave with a strong moral compass and the ability to contribute meaningfully to society, living out our vision: We are all loved. We all belong. We all have something to give.
